From the very beginning, The main character of this short film is a depressed old man who almost feels nothing about this world and tends to suicide by hanging himself. However, he experiences the inner change to a person who still wanna live and see the world through the so-called suicide tour on which he experienced different kinds of places.
The death is kind of a catalyst that drives this story moving forward by his characteristic personality. It surprises the audience to some point in that he doesn’t lead the old man to hell normally, instead, he mocks the way of the old man trying to end his life. Then the story moves to the next stage when the death leads him to the suicide tour showing several places around the world, which is way more worthwhile ways of killing himself compared to dying in the vanilla house. Different kinds of ways of suicide, to some extent, show how distinctive and big this world is. Golden gate bridge, Eiffel tower, Siberia, Niagara, Big Ben, New York, Egypt. Besides, those cruel ways of dying, which stimulate the fear of the old man, is another way of showing that he realizes it is good to live because he hasn’t enjoyed this big world yet. What is more, the most surprising twist is that the character leading him is not the death but an angle, which is really warm-hearted and carries me long.
As we can see, the main characters are the boy who wears the yellow scarf and the girl with a pink hat. The boy experiences the inner changes, from a person who always misses his beloved father and feels sorrowful with that yellow umbrella to a person who can open his heart to other people and relieve himself of his past. Besides, we can tell his realistic emotions and feelings such as Blue, excited, sad, and pleased. The shift towards the attitudes shows the girl in this film is a well-developed and multi-layered character. For starters, all of her movements and facial expression can obviously illustrate that she is such an indifferent and remorseless girl, however, she becomes a caring and warm person who salvage the protagonist to some point in the end.
These characters play an important role in this film, especially the girl who pushes the story moving forward when she felt the umbrella was lost and got the boy wrong with her bad attitude towards the boy then the story comes to reveal the past of the boy, which could be really sad and carry me long.
